CSWAC Members are invited to attend the Trafficking Deportation Pipeline Workshop.

Date: Thursday, October 19, 3:00–5:00 PM
Location: Bunche Hall 10383, 11282 Portola Plaza Los Angeles, CA 90095

The UCLA Transnational Gender and Labor Working Group, IRLE, and CSW|Streisand Center invite you to attend a workshop with Professor Elena Shih on “The Trafficking Deportation Pipeline: Community-Based Research with Criminalized Migrants and Sex Workers.”

Community-based research has become a buzzword in the neoliberal academy, with the capacity to drum up enormous funding for projects that remain extractive at their core. At the same time, the need for research to speak to multiple publics remains more urgent than ever. This talk thinks through some of these paradoxes and tensions: of productivity and "slowness," of creating voice while carving a space for silence, and of de-centering expertise within the academy. Located between ethnography and community organizing, it contextualizes some of these questions in work with migrant and sex worker rights organizations throughout Asia and the US.

Workshop will be held hybrid in Bunche Hall 10383 from 3:00–5:00 PM

By invitation only. Light refreshments provided.

Spaces in the workshop are limited. If you are interested in attending, please email Prof. Jennifer Chun at [log in to unmask] or Esther Kim at [log in to unmask] We will be in touch with more information about how to register.
