Faculty mini-presentations will be given by:\n\nAnurima B anerji\, Associate Professor\nWorld Arts and Cultures/Dance\nPresentation: The Impossibility of Indian Classical Dance\n\nKristy Guevara-Flanagan\, Associate Professor\nFilm\, TV and Digital Media\nPresentation: Body Parts feature documentary\n\n\n\nBIOS:\n\nANURIMA BANERJI is Associate Professo r and current Graduate Vice Chair in the Department of World Arts and Cult ures/Dance. She is the author of the monograph Dancing Odissi: Paratopic P erformances of Gender and State (Seagull Books/University of Chicago Press \, 2019)\, recipient of the 2020 de la Torre Bueno Prize awarded by the Da nce Studies Association. With Dr. Violaine Roussel\, she co-edited How to Do Politics with Art (Routledge\, 2017). Currently she is working on a new book project\, The Impossibility of Indian Classical Dance\, as well as c o-editing The Oxford Handbook of Indian Dance with Dr. Prarthana Purkayast ha.\nAs a poet and trained Odissi dancer\, Banerji shares the faculty’s important goal of bridging the worlds of academia and art. Her research pr incipally concerns critical historicizations of Indian dance and its relat ionship to the state. Banerji’s work is situated in the fields of dance and performance studies\, and informed by an intersectional and interdisci plinary approach based on insights from postcolonialism\, critical race th eory\, feminist and queer thought\, and studies of class\, regionalism\, a nd religion in India.\nKRISTY GUEVARA-FLANAGAN has been making documentary and experimental films about gender\, the Latinx community\, and represen tation for nearly two decades. Her first feature-length film\, Going on 13 (2009\, Co-Directed by Dawn Valadez)\, covers four years in the lives of four adolescent girls and premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Her next feature\, Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines (2013) \, traces the evolution and legacy of the comic book hero Wonder Woman as a way to reflect on society’s anxieties about women’s liberation. Her following short\, What Happened to Her (2016) explores our cultural obsess ion with images of the dead woman on screen. Guevara-Flanagan has won many accolades for her newest short film\, Águilas (2021\, Co-Directed with M aite Zubiaurre)\, about an all-volunteer organization that searches for mi grants who go missing as they cross the border between Mexico and the Unit ed States. Águilas won Best Short Documentary at SXSW and was subsequentl y shortlisted for the Academy Awards.
