Dear Colleagues,

As many of you know, the Diversity Requirement in the College has already passed twice, but opponents have invoked a procedural loophole and so it comes up for a vote a third time.

Despite the fact that this requirement is only in the College, all UCLA faculty are eligible to vote, and so,
we would encourage you all, including emeriti faculty, to cast your vote during the period from March 30 to April 10.

Dear friend,
I am writing to you as someone I know to be deeply concerned about diversity and inclusion at UCLA. We have proposed the adoption of a Diversity Requirement for all undergraduates in the College of Letters and Science as just one small step toward both the improvement of our campus environment and essential preparation for undergraduates who will live and work in environments that are more complex and diverse than ever before. We share the view that an ability to understand the perspectives of others whose views, backgrounds, and experiences may differ from one’s own is a core

Dear Colleagues at the Center for the Study of Women,

Because the understanding of a key aspect of diversity – gender -- is foundational to what we do, I wanted to call your attention to the proposed diversity requirement for undergraduate education. I am sure that many of you give undergraduate courses that would be a wonderful addition to the list of approved courses, and I encourage you to submit them, if you have not done so already. I am attaching a submission form, which, along with your syllabus, is to be sent to Christina Palmer, Faculty Executive Committee Chair,

Dear CSW Faculty Affiliates,

Our 25th annual Thinking Gender conference planning is underway and I'd be grateful if you’d please distribute the attached call for a graduate student conference coordinator. We're looking for a motivated student to help plan and facilitate our international conference. The position entails a 25% GSR appointment in Fall and Spring, a 50% GSR appointment in Winter, and fee remission in all three quarters. Applicants' academic interests should be compatible with CSW’s core research on women, sexuality and gender, and we encourage students in any discipline to apply.

Hello everyone—

On June 10th, CSW will undergo a Five-Year Review that will cover the period of my directorship. These reviews are designed to help the ORU and the UCLA administration to consider CSW's goals and mission, accomplishments, possible future directions, and any problems that might need to be addressed. When then Dean Scott Waugh appointed me in August of 2005, I had the CSW Fifteen Year Review, which had been completed in March of 2005, to reference as I established my initial goals. These reviews are very very helpful and will provide a great resource to the incoming CSW

The California Series in Public Anthropology is continuing its International Competition in 2013. It seeks proposals for short books oriented toward undergraduates that focus on how social scientists are facilitating social change. We are looking for accessible, grounded accounts that present compelling stories, stories that inspire others.

The proposals should describe a book that will be relatively short - around 100 pages - with a personal touch that captures the lives of people. The core of the book should involve stories of one or more social scientists as change agents, as making a difference in the world.

Hello everyone--

I am writing to invite any interested faculty to the first ever CSW Faculty Writing Retreat. I have heard about these retreats held on other campuses and those who attended said they were incredibly helpful. One junior faculty member said she finished a draft of a chapter in her retreat and another told me she finished an article. The way the retreat works is as follows. Participants complete all the research for a piece of writing — generally for a chapter in a book or an article— prior to the retreat. At the retreat, which will begin Friday,

Hi everyone--

I would like to extend a personal invitation to two events that we are
trying out this quarter. CSW will hold two Works in Progress Symposia
that will feature the research projects of this year's recipients of
Faculty Development grants. Each faculty recipient will speak for about
five minutes on their project, then we will open the discussion up to
panelists commenting on each others' work and the audience responding to
the projects. These symposia bring together an interdisciplinary panel
speaking to an interdisciplinary audience to see if we could generate
substantive cross-disciplinary dialogue. These events will also
